Shishkan Mandal Karad came in to existence on 2 August 1920 after a decision in the meeting held to pay homage to the great national leader, Lokmanya Tilak. The institution is successfully working for quality education to the people in the vicinity of Karad. Due to its illustrious career, the institution has won the valuable trust and confidence of the society. Tilak high school happens to be the first school of the institution. The school boasts of having produced a number of illustrious students of who are late. Shri Yashwantrao Chavan. (Former Deputy Prime Minister of India), Late Shri Khashaba Jadhav (first Indian to win an individual Medal in wrestling at the Olympics) Raosaheb Gogate (well known industrialist) Late V.S page (former speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Council), to name just a few.

The institution is a result of inspired people from the various strata of society. The progress of the institution has been witnessed by well known personalities as will be evident from their presence on various occasion.

Educational achievements of the Institutions.
Over hundred students from Tilak High School & Lahoti Kanya Prashala have succeeded in shining in the merits list of S.S.C. Examination.

Over 150 students have secured various scholarships Miss. Shubhangi Karande a student has succeeded in winning the Arjuna Award for her contribution in weight lifting.

With changing times the institution found it necessary to cope with the needs of the society and the results was establishment of the first school of girls in Karad in 1945.
The institution opened the first college for women in Satara District.

The latest of the various educational experiments of the institution is the setting up of Ardha-Nivasi Gurukul' on attempt to revive the ancient system of Gurukul Education which caters to the all round development of the student - as a human being.

The teacher in the institution to have continued their pursuit of knowledge and in the process also secured various awards and prizes. It is matter of pride for the institution that there are three teachers awarded with national Best Teachers award two teachers have own the state level award. A number of teachers have been honoured for their research contributions too.

Present Status of the Institution
The institution which began modestly eighty years ago has today gained grand position and boast of successfully running no less than sixteen branches doing the pious work of imparting knowledge to about ten thousand students ranging from preprimary to senior college. There are 261 teachers and 65 non-teaching staff members in this institution. Every branch of the institution has an independent and well furnished building of its own and total valuation of assets are around Rs. 1744000=00 (seventeen Lakh forty four thousand) the institute is leading name in the educational field in south Mahasrashtra. The result of all the branches should be classed an excellent as they are in the range of 80-100%.

The institution has proved it's capability in catering to the needs of the society in accordance to the changing times. The institution has undertaken a number of social awareness projects along with educational responsibility. The contribution of the students pulse polio programs. AIDS awareness program, Social Service is noteworthy. The institution organizes a number research projects. Various lecture series cultural activities; Competitions are organized every year by the institution.

Educational facilities- through various branches the institution provides educational facilities right from preprimary to senior college (graduation) to its students. Besides there is an institution giving I.T. and computer education. A sewing class also helps achieve professional proficiently for needy women.
